I've Landed!

Woohoo...I've found a new home...I now work for a Japanese Bank in the city. I am very happy...my co-workers are great. I started the 5th of July. The work is interesting. I haven't worked for a bank in a while many things have changed.

The hunt continues

So the job hunt continues...I have sent out 100s of resumes to the black hole that is the Internet. So far not a single nibble. I went to a couple of agencies - one raised my hopes (I should have known better) they had the 'perfect' spot for me. It sounded fantastic a well known hotel in times square - newly renovated a Tech Service manager...woohoo...nothing not a call back and no answer to any emails/calls. harrumph... At the suggestion of the mgmt. consulting place I've redone my linkedIn summary and my resume. I've gotten a few emails and calls from agencies, but nothing has come through. So where do I go from here? Do I retrain? ugh...I know how to do tech support and how to be an assistant. Which way do I go now? I make lists of my strengths to see if anything jumps out...lists of what I like to do...I cross reference them to see if there is a job profile hidden in there and so far nothing jumps out. I'll keep searching..if anyone has suggestions send them my way...nope no pole dancing in my future...I am not limber anymore!! LOL

Above a picture of the new Italian style garden at Snug Harbor. The plan there is to plant grapes and perhaps make some wine. Should be nice. I really like this garden. It is very peaceful and not at all crowded.

Little Mimi and her faithful sidekick Lola...I've a farm in the garden - potatoes and squash in the back garden, tomatoes, basil, lettuce, pole beans and zucchini in the front and side gardens. Should be an interesting harvest!

Mimi under the Chinese Snowball. I love this bush it is tremendous. I trim it back every year and it comes back even more beautiful and with tons more flowers.

Looks like the sun is finally out after a solid week of rain. I am going to sit outside and read some.

Have to work on HTML I am enjoying that. I can find and fix my mistakes. I have to see when the javascript class is going to be offered. It is something to do and keep my mind active. The classes are offered just off Canal Street right on Broadway. That area is crazy busy. There are tons of tourists going through chinatown. I love going to the bakeries there and picking up pork buns...yum!! I know there was a real good (and cheap) dumpling place. I have to see if I remember where it was. I love dumplings and noodle soups...so good! Next week I'll head out and spend a day taking pictures. I have to see how the WTC construction is going. There is also an Alexander McQueen exhibit at the Met. That is not to be missed. I wish I had a talent...

Color!!?

all... Here is a basket full of color! These are going to turn into a granny square blanket...that is what is in my mind at the moment...I am not super crazy about having to hide 50 million ends..so we'll see what happens. a sample of the motifs I may use for the new blanket..

I can't stray too far from my normal black and white work so here is a quick peek at a project that I've been working on for the past year or so. These are going to turn into a series of 4 art quilts. These are all from my fave park on the island, Snug Harbor. If you are in the NY area and have the opportunity to visit you should! I love the neptune fountain. I saw the Neptune fountain in Madrid and I have to say that it can't hold a candle to the one here. I printed these on fabric. It should turn out pretty cool...am looking forward to starting these.

Am about 2/3rds of the way through a new wrap. I like the flecks of color in the brown. It is very cozy.

Still submitting resumes...no luck as yet. Something will come up.

Tomorrow is my first html/css class. Am looking forward to learning something new. Will post more tomorrow on that!

I took advantage of the gorgeous weather on Monday and Mimi and I planted some potatoes in the back yard, tomatoes and basil in the pots in front. I wish I'd had my camera with me to take a picture of Mimi's face when I dug up some worms!! She is absolutely a city kid!

Am Still Here!

Hi all... couldn't resist posting at least one picture...I thought I'd post my favorite from Madrid...it was after a rain storm...we stuck it out in the market just outside plaza mayor. we came out and looked toward the plaza del sol and saw this rainbow! I feel like this...like I am in a storm and soon a rainbow will appear and everything will be ok.

But anyway...enough of that!! I haven't fallen off the map..I've been teaching myself html/css...woohoo...let's see what kind of mischief I can get into!! Other than that I am working on the garden. Am planning on growing more vegetables this year...am assuming that I won't be employed anytime soon. I am sending out resumes, but am not having any luck. I miss the old days...You'd call up your fave employment agency, they'd have you come in and within a week or two you had a job. It was so much more personal. Now you are sending out resumes and you've no idea who is reading them. You don't hear back...there is no connection. Something will turn up eventually. until then, I'll take classes and make stuff. I am hoping for a sunny day so I can take those durn pictures and post them to etsy. I have to finish drafting the 'angry bunny' character I want to screen print on some tee shirts. The elephants really turned out cute. Mimi wore it last night to bed...she looked adorable.

well back to coding...wish I was in Spain!!!!!

Finishing...

I finally finished a purple vest I started some time ago. It needed something...I didn't know what so I came up with some cute lady bugs just to jazz it up a bit...

Worked on a butterfly for something else that is in my head..

I submitted a few more resumes. no luck as yet! Looked through my linkedin profile it looks good...I have a lot of recommendations. Everytime I send out a cover letter I really just want to type in PLEASE HIRE ME you won't regret it!! blah...I've got to come up with something..this just isn't working for me.

The sun finally came out this afternoon and the first daffodil was out! Also saw a robin. Those always cheer me up.

I made a yummy lentil soup for dinner. The secret is to dice some potatoes, parsnips and carrots. Thinly slice some leeks (just the white part - I used only one) and a couple of celery stalks, leaves and all saute the veg in some olive oil until lightly browned and add to the lentils. So good...

Busy as a Bee!

I was working in the garden and the first flowers are out...this really cheered me up!

I finished up a baby sweater. I just have to add a tie for the front. I like this color very much. I am going to try making a hat maybe booties too...This is a real quick crochet.

Here is a close up...

Am working on a real simple lace scarf. 3 knit, 3 purl with an eyelet. I'm about half way done.

I took my screen printing lab on Sunday. I did a two color print. I had to cut out two stencils and mix my paint colors. I like how the tee turned out. I drew a design on my screen. I didn't print anything off that I ran out of time. I'll get to that sometime this week. Make Workshop is good. I like the instructor very much. Whitney was very patient and answered all of our questions. I would absolutely take another class!

This is a nice cheerful sunny yellow tee for my little Mimi. I have to heat set it and embroider in the tails.

I've submitted a few more resumes...let's see what this week brings.

ugh..so I can't draw!

So these are some of the drawings I came up with for a tee shirt for my Mimi. I can't draw all that well!! Boy am I jealous of people who can really draw!! I kinda like the purple bunny...Mr. B says that it looks deranged...ok...so maybe if I change the eyes to something cuter...Maybe I should just stick to landscapes...well I need to pick something for the silk screening class on Sunday. I'd like to do one stencil print and one print using the drawing fluid and screen filler method. I can do something freehand for the latter method...I think I can!

Other than my adventures in drawing am submitting resumes and had one phone interview. No nibbles besides that. Talk about feeling unloved!

Passing the time

Yesterday I took a class at Make Workshop it's on the East side of Manhattan in silk screening. It was fun...next Sunday we have a 4 hour hands on lab. We will create stencils or draw our image on the screen and apply to whatever fabric we are using. I am going to work on a stencil for a cute 'angry' bunny I drew. I'd like to use a real bright purple and green combo for a tee shirt for Mimi. I'd also like to try free hand scribbles for a scarf that should be pretty cool. I'd love to work on creating a stencil for a Marimekko style print. The process is pretty simple. The hardest part is coming up with a design I can actually draw!! Something else that can be done is a photo can be transferred onto a screen. There is a place called Standard Screen that can do that for you.

Just around the corner from the class was the New Museum. The building is pretty interesting it looks like a tower made out of children's blocks.

Working on a cowl for rebel. It is actually more of a magenta color.

Sunday was a beautiful day out. We decided to take Mimi out for a day at the Staten Island Zoo.

There are a few little patches of snow left on the ground.

I've signed up for a silkscreening workshop on 3/3 in the city. I am so looking forward to it. I have to bring in drawings, pictures and materials to print on. This afternoon I have a resume development workshop. Other than that it is all quiet here.

Purple cowl

So purple cowl has a home! That'll keep Ms. M warm as she runs around the island with her two adorable kiddies. I have to make one for my rebel. Am using a delicious warm Norwegian wool in a beautiful magenta. Haven't told her it is for her yet. I like to see the reaction!

After the magenta cowl is finished will start work on some broomstick lace. I have a need for a vest and I think that'll look real nice. I've the perfect grey yarn I picked up from Elann some time back.

Amazing how much you can get done when you don't have a day job to interfere!!!

First up - a silk scarf I dyed just before I was let go. I used Shibori tying technique, I then dyed it in a combination of tea/coffee (or Kawfee).

Next is a sweater I made out of bulky yarn. It is based off a granny square...I was making a baby blanket and I folded it when I was done for the night...I saw that there was a shape in it...an arm and the body! Go figure...Why haven't I seen this before? I am sure someone out there has seen this before. I won't claim this one as my invention. I think it is pretty durn cool! So I measured it up against a comfy sweater I wear around the house, made a second granny - sewed it up the back and across the shoulders. I think it turned out pretty nice.

Next on the crafty band wagon is hairpin lace. I bought the loom ages ago - tossed it in a drawer for 'one day when I have time' So I have time now... It is pretty easy once you get use to how to hold it and your hands. Keeping the tension even.

and here is a baby blanket I made for someone special to me....I hope she likes it!

I am having an interesting time...mornings I search for a job...take long walks with Lola the terminator...then work on my yarn...after everyone goes to sleep I do on-line training. It is a pretty full day. Have started doing baking again. I stopped for a real long time.

Day in the City

Earlier this week I had my first appointment with the company that is to help me find my next job. They basically give me help with interviewing, resume writing, and also offer office space. They've a good set up and are located in midtown NY. I went back on Wednesday for a one on one...it took all of 15 mintues. It took me 1 1/2 hours to get there, waited an hour (because I have to get there early) and the session was 15 minutes long. ARGH...ok whatever...I had my camera with me (of course) and took photos of Grand Central and the public library. The weather was nice and I enjoyed walking around.

Amazing what you can get done when you have time! These are some of the shawls I've been working on over the past month. I finally had time to sew in the loose threads. I'll have to photograph them properly for etsy. That is what I do in the early afternoon/late evening. Mornings are spent scanning job sites, newspapers (NYTimes) sending out resumes and checking LinkedIn.

I hope tomorrow is a little warmer...

I finished the sweater for Mimi...of course it vanished into her room as soon as she saw it..what's not to love hot pink with sparkles...yikes...will post a picture of her wearing it in the morning when there is better light. For now it is in my room waiting on a button.

Being unemployed is interesting. At first I felt guilty...like I should be doing something, being productive. I kept thinking that there was something I was forgetting. I would obsessively check my email and phone...to find that there was nothing there. Nothing was pending. No one was waiting on me to deliver something. There were no calls, no emails, no messages, no spreadsheets...nothing...nothing...not a single thing. After so many years of planning, working, motivating, meeting, collaborating..non-stop activity...there is just silence...stillness. There is time to breathe and to think. I've time for walks...yep I walk every day even when it is so cold my eyes tear. I think. I've never had time to think about what I wanted for myself. So lets see what will happen. I think it is just great to have that time to breathe and reflect on what my next step should be.

baby/puppy love

So today we shoveled out the driveway in the back...there must have been 2-3 feet of snow back there..ugh. I'll have to remember this time of year in July/August when we have the 101 degree 100% humidity days!!

Still trying to figure out what is next. most tech jobs I've looked at need you to lift up to 50 lbs. I can't do that anymore...ugh ugh ugh...

Well am working on the long awaited etsy store. stuff won't sell before it's posted anymore...there is no one around to buy it off the needles!

Am almost done with the shawl I started. That yarn to the left is what I am using. The color is really nice and it is warm. I've sorted out my paypal account. finished the baby bottle covers..those turned out really cute.

Tomorrow is another day. Let's see what I can finish and post.

Room with a view

Early yesterday evening...SNOW and more on the way...the only upside to have been made redundant..I don't have to commute in to work. I work from home looking for work! Am also doing some on-line training. Am really just trying to figure out what to do next. Well so far I've no hits on my resume...so for now will just have to keep searching and thinking. I do miss some of the peeps in the old company. Working at home is very different...there is no one to talk to or bounce ideas off of.

Will try to update this blog more often now that I have free time.

Tatting and gardens and stuff

Hi all..

So I've been busy learning how to tat. I've also been working on more shrugs and shawls for the on-line store. I need to find a model for those. I think they look better when a real person wears them. My no name dummy just isn't that great of a model..oh well. I had fun at lunch the other day...I went to Seaport Yarns and picked up a couple of balls of yarn...cause I really need more yarn!!

We took a break last weekend and went to my fave S.I. park, Snug Harbor. Princess had a ball chasing butterflies...she almost caught them too...

Chef and his Girlfriend are now in San Francisco, so I'll be making a trip there soon. Am hoping to make a side trip to Yosemite.

typical street in Madrid..so much to see! Everytime we walked down a street and looked down there would be so much to see. Their pastry shops are so great! I should have gained weight from all the empanadas I ate, but I actually lost weight...gotta love it!

Back from Madrid!

We had a great time in Madrid! Food was great, weather was a bit rainy and cold. We visited Toledo, Segovia, and Avila those are really beautiful cities. We spent a lot of time walking around Madrid getting to know the city.

It's been ages! Between work and my little Mimi there isn't a heck of a lot getting done. Finally finished my japanese inspired scarf..pictures to follow. Am waiting on a nice sunny day to take pics of all the stuff I've finished.

She had a great time at her first New York city parade! After that we had lunch at Central Park Zoo..she is a real New York baby..she loves grilled hot dogs!

Where does time fly people? Between work nonsense, health issues (nothing serious just normal junk), working on items for my etsy shop and working on my portfolio...time just zips on passed me.

to do list for today:

finish toddler dresses
see if fabric order came in
send out some orders I've got in (exciting!)
get great niece's size so I can make a sample she can model
make a few freezer meals I can toss in the oven to defrost
check out FIT for portfolio requirements

Where has time gone!?

A lady bug landed in my yard and was giving out candy...

Here is Mimi with Great-Grandma...they were engaged in a deep conversation.

I haven't been able to do too much work on my projects. I did manage to make a super cool neck warmer for my sit n knit group swap. The lady I created a neck warmer for said she loved fall colors...I did a cable stitch that wove in and out of itself. I like how it turned out. I hope it keeps her nice and warm.

Am about half way through my physical therapy for my neck and am absolutely feeling much better. I will not be lifting anymore heavy equipment any time soon. My left thumb is still a bit jacked up, but am sure it will heal in time. Grrrr it is sure bumming me out not being able to knit or crochet.

I want to make an EZ baby surprise sweater for Ms. Mimi...just as soon as my hand is better I will cast on.

Christmas decorations are out already. I still have my Halloween stuff out...what is the rush?

As promised!! A couple of the projects I've been working on...

A baby sweater for Mimi..making it out of Cupcake yarn in Pink Lemonade from Lion Brand

Then another pink sweater I crocheted in a dusty pink for one of the girls at work...Just have to sew in the label and a couple of snaps.

Then a sweater I knit for myself (it only took me all summer!) yarn is Rowan Tapestry. Unfortunately I started it before Weight Watchers so it is way big...I lost 25 pounds Wohooo...I didn't take that into consideration when I was working on the darn thing. It is big, but I will wear it in the winter...I don't want to pull it out.

I've been working like a DOG! I have a couple of things working on the needles and hook...I haven't had a chance to photograph.

All,

It was cold, damp, and fog hung thick over Times Square but that didn't keep spirits down.

We did very well this year! It was great seeing people from two offices participating is this event.

Here is Ann our Captain and a survivor holding our sign. She is a great person and I love that she organized this for us.

Mr. Hubby was there with me too. He is super supportive of me and my many projects! I have to give a big cyber hug to all his co-workers who sponsored me. Most of these people don't know me but were so very generous I can't thank them enough!! Many thanks to my friends and co-workers for their generous donations.

All in all a great day!

This Friday I played hookey from work and went to an all day dyeing class at The Yarn Tree in Williamsburgh, Brooklyn. The instructor, Linda Labelle, was as great as always! I took 2 weaving classes with Linda so it was like visiting an old friend!

This won't be a wordy post I'd rather show pictures of the yarns I dyed and had drying on the Pear tree. Of course my neighbors were all giving me strange looks! It isn't every day you see yarn hanging off of a pear tree! LOL

Mimi at 3 1/2 months...cutie pie!! She loves fondling yarn almost as much as her Meema!!

I got a lot done this week!

Handmaiden Yarn crocheted up into a flirty scarf. The colors are not showing as nice as in person. They are a beachy type palette.

Here is my weaving off the loom...Woohoo...Am playing with the new colors to figure out a nice pattern. I'll be using Tsumagi silk in medium and dark grey along with black and a red to punch it up. I love the yarn from Habu ! You always get such interesting results...love love love it!

That weaving was fun to do...I used some on my Kuri Kura silk. It was lovely thick and thin.

I crocheted this little pinafore for Mimi. This was out of my stash work! No buying yarn for this little project. No pattern...kinda made it up as I went along. Hubby and I went to Target and picked up a little white dress for underneath.

Here is Mimi with her hooded blanket made by the lovely Ms. Pam. Ms. Pam is one of the ladies at work who gift every new baby at work with a handmade blanket.

This blanket was made by Nanny Franny. Isn't it fluffy?

For next week I have Mimi's summer dress to sew. I've cut it all out. I am looking at a sweater for myself. Coming up this month I am taking a class on two Saturdays at The Point NYC. A baby sweater class. That should be fun.

Am working on an art project that I am hoping to show at my favorite Park...more to follow on this one.

Multi-Tasking to the Max

Hi all!

Started my summer sewing for little Mimi. I haven't sewn for a little girl in a long time! Can't wait to see her in this little sun suit! So much fun!

Next, progress on my weaving! Am on my last few inches I should have this done by the weekend! I want to make a real simple dress and use this piece as a belt maybe...I am not sure. Have to see how it drapes. Then I can put a new warp on my Kromski. I ordered some silk tsumagi in light and dark shades of gray, cream and a shock of red.

Next, handmaiden yarn. i only ordered one skein to see how it turns out. I love the colors. It reminds me of a day at the beach. Am absolutely ordering more of this gorgeous yarn and making a little drapey coverup for the fall.

Here is a closer look at the stitches. I think I am going to try making a simple pinafore for Mimi using this stitch.

Peek a Boo!!

So here is little Mimi..that kid won't stay still long enough for her Meema to snap a picture...I'd forgotten how wiggily babies are!

So am working on my weaving. Am almost done with my bus knitting, a shippo scarf. I tidied up my corner in the basement and found loads of yarn I'd had totally forgotten about!

Last weekend hubby and I took a walk through the city. We passed by the Museum of Art and Design. We didn't go in...we did go into the American Folk Art museum. They had a few quilts that were very nice. One in particular made me laugh out loud..it was made out of coin condoms...very funny. They also had a nice collection of old 1900s carousel horses.

We ended our night with a meal at the Lederhosen. A pretty decent german restaurant on Grove street.

Is that weaving I see!!!

All,

I finally got back to my weaving. The warp is Cotton Gima in a cream color the weft is also Habu yarn - N-46 cotton nerimaki slub color 3. A real pretty blue grey color. It is looking like a japanese woodblock print.

really pretty. simple weave..no twists or turns I just want to see the dark and light play together.

I also knit up a quick shawl I have to attach buttons to it.

In closing baby feet in bunny jammies...so so sweet..hee hee

The Neptune fountain in Snug Harbor...I love this fountain and have taken so many pictures of it. I love it in the fall. I wish I had more time to work on everything I'd like to work on.

I love Neptune! This is such a beautiful spot. I can see the Arthur Kill Van Kull from this spot. The light is so great here.

so I am working on my Kusha Kusha scarf...yes...still! so so so fine that string...argh. and a lovely sweater...I have the front finished. I started the back. I hope I have enough yarn. I don't know it looks awful big to me. Well we'll see!

Habu Show - 2007

All,

It's that time of year again! Weavers taught by Linda Labelle got a chance to exhibit our projects at Habu. The temptation to buy more yarn was tremendous! I did remember I am quickly running out of space and have next to no time to work on anymore projects. I settled with being inspired by my fellow weavers.

The colors were incredible and the textures wonderful. I think everyone had something they had made by hand on. Shawls, scraves and hats were being fondled and admired. It was a great time.

Of course my honey was there to make sure I didn't slip into the back where Takako keeps the yarn.

Habu anyone?

I am so happy to be back on-line!

Well to start I had a fun time at Habu...a new shipment of yarn arrived while I was there. Talk about a kid in a candy shop!

I picked up two kits the fringe tape choker and a kid mohair cape. Fiddle head fern yarn, cashmere that I can use as a warp..it was coated in water soluble vinyl coating. more mohair to mix with some silk for a lighter than air shawl.

and this is the choker. It works up super quick! Lovely brown mohair that caught my eye I don't know what that will be. Does anyone have any ideas?

I started another baby blanket with the ladies at work! There are many babies expected.

Am super super busy at work....there is too much going on. I need more hours in the day! I am really looking forward to a long weekend.

Dinner under the stars

As a thank you my company treated a few departments to a dinner cruise around NY harbor. What a great treat! The weather held out, food was great, company was fun. It's not often hubby and I get dressed up. We normally wander around the city and go to one of our fave places in the village to eat. In the winter we like to see shows so we'll usually stop at Roxie's for their yummy pastrami.

We are pretty lucky to live in NY and take full advantage of it. Would I ever move away..hmmmm well as my nephew would say "OH HECKY NO!!"

Hi All!

It has been another crazy busy week here at El Ranchito. I was given an order for a special crib blanket. The following is what I came up with. I think it looks real pretty. I've selected a super soft, easy care yarn from the U.K. in a cream color. I am going to put a blue ribbon around the eyelet round there. It is taking me forever to get this one done. I think it is worth the time.

Learning bad habits!

Yep...I saw Fluffa's knitting waving in the breeze and I've seen Fluffa knitting in the car and I had to do it too!! Ok so it isn't knitting it's crochetting. Do you like the yarn?? I had it special dyed by the lovely Margaret over at Inspirations Yarn. Check out her website the link is in the side bar there...go visit! I love this yarn it is so bright! Hubby and I just got a new car so we thought we'd take a road trip up to Milford, PA. So so pretty.

I've always wanted to go into this shop. It is off the road and there is tons to look at. It is actually not a yarn store it is an embroidery type shop, but she had tons of old books! I score a few good ones there.

We went into Milford and there was a small craft fair (YEA!!) in the middle of town... I bought a beautful wooden vase made out of purple wood and maple. Here are a few of the offerings. There was also a table set up by some teacher's that went to Vietnam and a few other places in that area. They brought back a lot of pictures and woven shawls. I got a shawl...will photograph that outside tomorrow. It is made of Vietnamese silk. so beautiful! I am a sucker for handmade things!

Then we went into Child's state park. I love the waterfalls there. We use to bring the kids there all of the time when they were little. My son Chef would catch newts and salamanders. My daughter loved sitting in the stream. I miss those days when they were little.

Boy was it hot outside!

I finished my lovely Habu yarny thing...

It came out pretty good I think..just large enough for my shoulders...it'll look cool in the fall with a brown turtle-necked dress.

Well on to my next project! I really need to get a move on the weaving project. Hubby and I collected some interesting bits of nature to mount one of the pieces on...No hints! You'll have to be patient!

Can you Habu?

isn't it pretty?? A-129 in Ice Blue...the only thing that I don't like about Habu Yarns is the yarns don't have names...just numbers. It is a nice combo of 90% wool and 10% nylon. Am using honking big needles and will make a cool wrap/scarf.

I love the color...very pretty blue. I am feeling better a little tired. All results are in...everything was benign (sp? can't spell right now) Am taking iron pills and vitamin c to help my body absorb the iron. Have gotten lots of rest. I've been a total slacker at work. I still get in at 6:00 a.m. but I leave between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

I started weight watchers yesterday. I just need to lose a little weight and am looking into the New York Health and Raquet club for exercise. Lola bird will be going for nice walks with me.

What is up with the weather in NY lately? It is cold out. I put a jacket on to go to the Dr. I was cold!

7. My most favorite thing to do in the winter is un-button my honey's coat and snuggle under...that is the best place to be in the world! I love feeling his scratchy beard on my cheek and smelling his cologne (dolce and gabbana) It makes me feel totally loved and safe.

Weaving project in the sun

Hello!

It was a wacky crazy horrific week at work! There wasn't too much time to work on projects. I am working on one new baby blanket and of course my Weaving II project. Here is the inspiration picture along with the work in progress.

A sunny spot full of the yarn I am using. Light blues through black with a tiny touch of yellow as an accent color. The warp is a light grey tencel. The weft is a mix of yarns. I have yarn from Habu there as well.

Thank you for the nice comments on Hubby's garden. It has come a long way since we moved in. Here is a close up of the Dogwood flowers on the west side of the house.

First Ever Bag

Hi!

I finally used my sewing machine! I joined Woof Nanny's purse challenge http://iwannanewbag.blogspot.com/ It is not a pretty bag...actually it is kinda well sucky!! I know I'll use it when I go to the park for my water and any small knitting or crochet project. My next one will be better!! I didn't use a pattern..that was part of the problem! I used Tea Towels! That was the challenge. I should have used the heavier weight towel for the bottom half of the body and the lighter weight for the handles.

I do like the colors very much. I picked up a couple of tote bag patterns from JoAnn's they have McCalls patterns for $1.00 can't beat that!

We worked on the yard today. The irises needed to be divided in the worse way. I finished cleaning up the basement from last weekend flood. My yarn escaped damage!! I only lost a small bag of yarn that was going to be used for the Project Linus blankets. No biggie I have more yarn that I can make into blankets.

I've started an easy sweater for myself.

I've got sunshine on a cloudy day!

It was miserable out today so to make it sunshiney here are pictures of my favorite flowers from my yard...daffys, jumping jacks and an unidentified flower. It is very tiny and dainty. My across the street neighbors gave me all of their plants before they moved away and this little gem was one of them.

So I don't know what is up with all of the rain, but I'll tell you something the flowers are digging it!

Splish Splash I wuz takin' a bath!

I hope you all had a better Norteastern than we did!! We got an indoor pool in our basement. Not fun at all. I only lost a couple of books and a bag of left over yarn I had left on the floor. The Loom was on my cutting table still in it's bag! Thank goodness. A few area rugs met with an untimely end. Well at least there was no yucky sludge or mud to clean up!

So I have to do a final project for my Weaving II class. I have to create two related pieces. They don't necessarily have to be twill or even traditonal weaving materials. I can use whatever I like. This is the first time I have to do an Artsy type project since junior high...don't you dare ask when that was!! I ain't talking! I am thinking either 8x8 or 10 x 10.
The first piece I am thinking of doing is inspired by my favorite picture of the marina. The day I took that picture there was a nasty storm coming in. The water and sky was all blues, tealy, blacks, silvers and whites...The water looked so still like a mirror reflecting the turbulent clouds overhead.

My second piece will be based on a building I love on 57th street between 5th and park avenues. Do you see the angles? The colors are really cool. It is the same color family as the marina picture. I think I will do a twill and use wire from network cables so I can shape it some. This building is across the street from the Nike store. I love how it reflects the buildings across the street. It'll pick up the color of the sky and sun as well. This building is trying to squeeze into the space between two other old school buildings. It cracks me up! So what do you think?

Well let us see how this goes. The projects will be displayed at a show at Habu. Very cool!

Easter was GREAT! I somehow got talked into cooking...I don't know how that happens, but it was fine.

My Mom was there, Artiste and her Opera Singer, My Brother NY Cop, his lovely wife, their two girls...so beautiful, my other sister Frankie and her beau the sweet quiet man and her three kiddies! I had so much fun.

It was the little one's 2nd Bday...so we had cake.
Lots of cake! Tons of Cake!!!

Blue Boy

Blue boy! I think he turned out quite nice...It was super busy at work this week so nothing special to report. Weaving class on Saturday was good. Next week there is no class. The Saturday after we bring in strange materials to weave with...plastic, grass, paper...whatever! That should be interesting. Artsie and Opera Singer took us out to dinner on Friday. It was great to see them. They always make us laugh! It is so great to have a sibling that you can hang with!

Eureka!!

We have Twill!!! Yep! You can kinda see the weave slanting to left \ then to the right / all zig zaggy goodness! it shows best on the white stripe I think...I do have to kinda squitch my eyes!

How did I accomplish this twilly miracle...well that is were the stick with loops came in...each slot has two warp ends and each hole has one warp end.

Every other extra slot warp is picked up with the pick up stick. The loopy string - official name is leashes - is pulled off of the dowel and the placed in position by pulling a loop between each warp end and put back on the dowel. The setup shown here is for plain weave on either end the center bit is twill.

when I want to weave the twill part I bring the leashes forward and pull up

who would have thought!! I have to practice this week. Saturday we learn more cool stuff. Then we have off for Easter. We need to start our warp for the end of class project.

It was great to learn what the loopy stick was for!

I've tons of daffodils coming up...some hyacinths are blooming and the lilac will have a lot of blooms this year.

I have nothing on the needles right now...am not sure what to make next. I am going to try a sweater next. A simple one.

Foamy finish

Here is Lola looking at a finished Foam. This turned out real nice! Soft, light and very warm. I will enjoy wearing this in the cold cold server room! I am very happy on how this shawl turned out. I have a few skeins left. I am going to save those and use them in a weaving project.

We had horrible weather in NY. I had to skip weaving class, the car's wheels were stuck in ice. blah! Amazing Thursday I went outside in a suit jacket!

Oh Boy

So this is my first homework assignment from Weaving II. What it is for?? Beats the heck out of me...if there are any weavers out there that can enlighten me I would truly appreciate it. All I know is I had to tie the yarn off using an overhand knot...yea you're impressed...and the loops have to be the same length.

All will be revealed this coming Saturday.

Muy quiet en el Ranchito!

I started my Weaving II class yesterday. It was good...I think it is going to be a difficult class for me. eek! It is being held in Williamsburg, Brooklyn...a very artistic type up and coming neighborhood. For many years it wasn't considered safe. There are many great boutiques there offering one of a kind products. Well worth a look!

Right now my loom is in the teacher's Brooklyn studio. It is partially strung up...I know that isn't the right expression...bah...help me out weavers!! The heddle is threaded and the rest of the warp is hanging there!!

Next Saturday we finish with the tensioning and winding of the yarn. We'll start weaving then, I guess. I'll have pictures next week.

My fluffy shawl is almost ready for an edging. I am really liking how it is turning out. Next I am going to try a cute sweater I saw.

El Ranchito was muy busy!!

I finished my weaving project. I was happy to be done! Next Saturday is the first day of weaving II class! wahoo!! I get to go to the Yarn Tree in Brooklyn. I am really looking forward to it. This particular weaving I was hoping to make into a real elegant shawl for when we go out fancy, but it is soo delicate I decided to frame it. I think it was a nice experiment! I will try again maybe narrower and no gaps. The gaps would look real cool with I think wool..then I can lightly felt the wool.

I got in two packages on Friday! One from Inspirations Yarn. This is really beautiful yarn. It is called Foam 86% Kid Mohair, 14% Nylon. I love the color. I actually went back on the web site http://inspirationsyarn.com/index.html to order more foam and similar yarn in a red!! A certain sister maybe getting a little something something!!

The second package was from Elann. They had their Super Kydd for a good price. I love the chestnut color! I have a cute pattern I am going to try out...let's see how I do!!

Introducing....

Chocolate!! Soooo soft and light!

a close up of the edge...I did a row of double crochet at the end of every knitted row. The next row was skip 2 doubles top of the 3rd double make two double crochet 2 chains and a single crochet repeat this pattern all the way around. I have 4 rows altogether of the pattern stitch. I love how it makes a nice wavy edge without being too too frou frou.

Lola likes that it is finished! Now she'll have someone to play with!!

Can't wait to finish the weaving...I've a great idea for that one!!

Spring...Has anyone seen Spring!!

This is the Neptune Fountain in Snug Harbor. I love fountains and this is a favorite one of mine. I love sitting by it on Sunday afternoons and listen to the concerts they have right next to it. So great to feel the sun on your face and a light cool breeze. If you haven't been to Snug Harbor it is worth a trip. There is a bus that goes there from the S.I. Ferry. The #40 bus goes there. Just ask the driver to let you off at Snug Harbor. http://mta.info/nyct/bus/schedule/staten/s040cur.pdf This is a great place to sit with your knitting. The Botanica Cafe serves a great lunch. I'll tell you one thing I CAN'T wait for the nice weather!!

On the crafty front there is not too much to write about. Am still working hard on Chocolate. Trying hard (really hard) not too start on the 2nd Habu kit....oh the temptation!!

KarenRebecca wanted to know about the cube I keep my yarn in. I picked those up in Target. They are real easy to put together. Surprising sturdy. They come six cubes in a box. I real admire the work I see in all my daily blog viewing. I've never made socks..they scare me for some odd-ball reason. One day I'll get my courage up! I love the dyed yarn and am totally jealous of you spinners out there!! I picked up a drop spindle, had a lady at a farmers market show me how to use it, but have not mastered that. BLAH! I'll get it one day!!

It was a busy busy day today. Lots of work. I really couldn't wait to get home and play with my yarn. As Mister Hubby's uncle says "you work to go on vacation!" This year Artiste, Mom and I are hoping to go to Spain. Last time we went to Spain they wouldn't let me go into any yarn stores!! hmpf. This year I am going into a yarn store!!

Progress!!!!

You all were right! The fuzzy funky picture was of the Empire State Building from the West side of the city, around 28th street and 9th Avenue.

Look at Chocolate!!
I buckled down and worked on this all weekend..well I did stop to take a ride with Mister Hubby out to Ikea to see if we could find something to keep my linen in. No luck! It was very crowded and full of screaming kids. Poor kiddies!

I did find this cool basket to keep my current work in process in. I normally use a small shopping bag, but the yarn would tangle. This is much nicer.

I also reorganized my craft corner. My books and yarn were getting out of control!

Lola's room is finished!

A little house I made. It didn't come out too great..the next one will be better.

This is the very first embroidery I made and kept for myself when I was about 13. I always gave away everything I made to my aunts and stuff.

My mom taught me to sew when I was really little. Whenever someone would give me cast off clothing I would re-work it. I'd take it apart and make it into a skirt or dress. Jeans were turned into pocketbooks or skirts with quilting and/or embroidery to embellish it and matching vests or jackets. I wasn't allowed to touch my mom's singer sewing machine. So all my costumes were hand sewn. I loved making stuff and giving it away. Once my daughter was born I made all of her dresses and pjs. I love that my mom taught me that skill. It is probably the only thing I can do without stressing over it. It is what it is!

This is a picture of one of my favorite pictures. Mister Hubby and I bought it in 1981 from a little gallery in Bay Ridge. This is one of three. I wish I knew something about the artist. The only thing the gallery owner knew was that they came from Switzerland.

Mr. Postman brought me YARN from Knit Picks!!

It was rough travelling into work today..so cold and slippery. Coming home was a Nightmare!! Broken down buses, a tractor trailer broken down on the start of the off ramp of the VZ bridge...oh boy. Thank goodness I know Spring is coming. One more day! I think I can make it.

Well I am going to change and have a quick dinner knit a little and go to bed!

Happy Valentine's Day!

Oh my goodness was it slippery this a.m. I thought for sure I would end up on my butt! The city is redoing Battery Place so there are iron plates all over the darn place. If you look between the cracks you can see the workmen below street level doing goodness knows what ..It must be freezing down there...anyhow. I am sure it will be beautiful when they finish.

Here is my picture of the day. The Empire State Building. What is cute is when my son Chef was a little guy he would call it the Vampire state building..we could never understand why he would get his HeMan sword whenever we said we were going any where near this building...it was to fight the vampires!! Too adorable.

Here is Chocolate..looking all soft. I have a long way to go. Then a close up of my yucky knitting. My knitting is not that great. I consider myself a crocheter.

And here is Phal fully open. Isn't it gorgeous! The Orchid Show should be coming up. I have to find out when it will be and mark it on my calendar. The last show I went to was held in the Financial Center. Such a gorgeous bunch of Orchids! Love, love, love them! I don't have too much luck with them.

Our view from the luxurious 50th floor client suite area...yep this is a great view. We watched the Intrepid when is was moved to New Jersey from NY for repairs, we've watched the blue angels fly overhead...all sorts of vessels. Sunsets that I will never forget. You can see the Verrazano bridge in the back left corner, Staten Island back right and in the foreground governors island. You can see a tiny smidge of Brooklyn off to the left of Governors island.

I know most people like the view facing north, but this is my favorite view.

Another object I just really like...this wacky sculpture from MOMA. I don't know why I like it so much. You can see my reflection in it. Mister hubby is reflected and teenage rebel daughter too.

On the knitting front, I got a couple of bands done on Chocolate..so soft, light and warm..love it! Not a lot of progress there. It is going to take a while. The wool is handspun so if I pull to hard or quick it snaps the yarn...blah. I must be delicate with it. It will be a dainty piece once complete.

Yesterday afternoon my sister Frankie and her 3 kiddies came to visit. We went to the S.I. Zoo and had a great day!

Twins?

My sister Artsie and I want to see if we really share a connection. We will be taking pictures everyday of something we see. We will not be checking each other's blog until Friday.

For my first pictures I will post the first crocus

and baby bird in the burning bush. I've no idea what type of bird this is, but it looked so cute all puffed out.

On the crochet front. I finished the first baby blanket and started baby blanket number two. I haven't heard if I got into the weaving class. Fingers crossed I did.

Sunshine

Presenting my first on my own weaving project...I love this one. The warp is a flat cotton yarn called gima. I am using two different silks..the slubby one is handspun curicura..the second is a very very fine hemp silk. It is taking a long time to weave, but it is very calming to me.

Here is a close and personal picture. I love how the hemp silk looks in the spaces. It is going to move around some. Once I take it off the loom I'll be able to tell how much..it'll be real funny if the thing just falls apart!

Here is a super close up, with a penny to compare, those pod looking things are curricula cocoons. I could resist buying a 1/2 ounce of them. They looked so pretty sitting in the basket. I am going to play around with making a free form crocheted wrap incorporating them into the design. That is for later. I am juggling a few too many projects at the moment.

I've received the Yarn Tree newsletter letting us all know that there are classes available for Spring 2007. I checked and yep, Weaving II was on there!! I signed up and am hoping I got in. It is amazing how quickly that class fills up. I never would have imagined that so many people would be interested. Well am keeping my fingers crossed that I got in.

2 projects sitting pretty

Before I even begin I just want to say one thing...I love Navman! We went to Artisie's yesterday and didn't get lost...we have conquered New Jersey jug handles...WAHOOOO! What a treat not getting lost! Love it yea!

Ok with that out of the way..here is chocolate...a close up and on the couch

Next is a baby blanket in a soft minty green and beige. I have to finish this one so I can begin a second one.

I love baby blankets...I love when the baby gets older and I see them dragging the blanket around. So very cool.

I got yarn to make another wrap...the colors are very cool. I show those once I start it. So I spent another $50.00 on yarn.

Let me get back to cooking dinner. It is so durn cold here I am making a pot of chili...I am going to really enjoy it! I love it spicy...with just a little rice on the side, lots of cheddar cheese on it.

Origami finds a new home

Origami looks great on Artsie!! Frankie also tried it on and it looks smashing on her too...so I guess I will be making a second origami for her.

Tomorrow I hope to get back to some fiber work. Chocolate is looking nice and fluffy. I am itching to start working with the Silk Steel Yarn...I am trying really really hard to finish one project before starting a new one, but let me tell you I am sorely tempted by that yarn. I have a baby blanket to finish...another to start. I need another pair of hands!

It was a fun day seeing all the kiddies and I will be posting tons of pictures on Yahoo for Artsie's friends to see. Kids are such characters! I especially enjoy them because I can go home to El Ranchito and enjoy peace and quiet...aaaaaaaaaaaah.....silence is truly golden!

Busy Babeee

Started and finished Kasumi Stole this weekend! Here are the pictures:

This was a real quick knit. I got the yarn at Habu - it was A-25 cotton chenille and A-28 Kasumi held together. Needles size was 17 and 35 for the cast off. Nice and easy. I will wear it tomorrow with a black turtleneck and grey slacks. Pretty me. Lola was very impressed. She didn't think I'd finish it so quickly.

Yesterday hubby and I went to see a play. It was very good. Very funny! I didn't think I'd like it so much. We saw - I Love You, you're Perfect, Now Change. I recommend you see it. Small theater. Seats were comfy we were in row N Left side, aisle for hubby's long legs. Lots of good laughs. What is interesting is the theater was a church.
We went to the 4:00 show. There was no traffic on the West Side, which is super unusual. We didn't go out to dinner we normally make a night out of it, but poor hubby was exhausted from working on the basement room. We just have to move the furniture in and we are done!

Next project on the needles - A stole: Using the wool and mohair yarn I picked up at Habu. There is the yarn looking all comfy cozy...I can hear Artsie...for me?! hmmm...you are getting Origami...your butt isn't as huge as mine so Origami will look Fabu on You my Sister!! Here is a closeup of stole...I think I will call it Chocolate Sundae...what do you think?

I also started drawing a new picture. That my friend will stay under wraps for now. Monet is the influence. It is a landscape. I like drawing it makes me happy!

Well I've got to start dinner...hamburgers and Neurenberg wurst for tonight. Yum!

Kasumi to you baby!

Pretty productive weekend here in El Ranchito!! I finished a felted scarf project. I used Patons wool yarn and small river rocks to do those bumps...

I finished Origami...I don't like how it looks on me, but I'll wear it at home...it just makes my butt look huge! Like I really need help in that area! LOL

So as a reward for being so darn good, Señor hubby drove me into New Yawk to Habu...hee hee...you know what is coming!! yep you know...I picked up my project from weaving class and TADA bought some yarn!!!
($94.00 on yarn so far this year)
It looks so pretty on my coffee table...heee heee..am twitching with excitment....hee hee..am giddy...ok ok...ahem. I picked up two kits. The one sitting with the candle is Kasumi Triangle Scarf. The one in the middle is Kushu Kushu merino and silk (ooooooo ssssssssssssssilk) stainless steel scarf. Yep you read that correctly my lovelies! stainless steel yarn! The cool thing about the Kushu Kushu is the merino will felt and the silk stainless steel will hold a shape! On the far right is some random yarn I picked up to do a wrap. Slubby wool, soft soft merino and some cool cotton tape to use as fringe. The last one will be my own design.

Fiber alert! For any fiber addict planning on being in New York first half of 2007...Radical Lace Subversive Knitting exhibit is on view between Jan 25th and June 17! I will be there on Saturday! I am looking forward to seeing this exhibit. Check out the web site http://www.madmuseum.org

Well I am going back to my yarn...drats...actually I have to help Señor Hubby paint the basement family room...blah...

Bright Spots

Car is fixed! it was the alternator...whatever...as long as it gets me where I am going I am happy!

We had a visit from our great niece and nephew, princess d and cannoli. They are soo adorable! So lovable! They look like little dolls! Of course they take after great auntie (through marriage LOL)

On the crafting front...I've started a new weaving project. It is sloooow going. I am using silk and hemp and it is very, very fine. No pictures yet...soon.

Am working on a knitted piece, cause I love multi-tasking!!

Origiami is from Knitovation. The yarn is Patons Divine. It is nice and soft and will be great for my cold cold server room. brrrrrr.

I have to start up with the baby blankets again. Lots of co-workers are expecting babies over the summer. Must be some kind of baby virus. Isn't it strange how you get waves of babies. Amazing! Well as long as it isn't me!!

Winter sale is going on now at Habu. I'll be stopping by on Friday...am totally addicted to their yarn!

Keep warm it is starting to really get cold as heck out there!

I am calling up for chinese take out tonight so I'll be working on Origami...or maybe the weaving..baby blanket...

Christmas

I knew it was going to be a rough chrimbo when the volt light went on in the car. BLAH...volt light, volt light...what the heck is a volt light and what the heck does it do!!!!!! so carless in NY, can't go to mom's for traditional christmas..we stayed home. We've never stayed home. Imagine that. It wasn't to to bad...Artsie and family + mom came to see us on christmas day, still it wasn't the same. I missed the little gnomes tearing through pressies...and grumpy brother teasing. Hubby and his pal Opera singer playing jokes on each other. wah...so sad. Car is still in the shop. I have a horrible stomach virus thing going on...I have been holding down water so it may get better. It will be a very quiet New Year.

Time Flies

No pictures today...It's been crazy busy here. Weaving in ends and matching colors to people. I just have to wrap! Is it me or is that the yuckiest part of the holidays? I think this year I am going the gift bag route. I've got a lot of stuff finished. I'll take pictures and post after the holidays...The Artiste does look at this space so I don't want her to know what Sandy Claws is bringing her! I am hoping for a new picture for my office. I've too many empty white wall space. Once the Habu weave show is over on Friday I'll hang my piece in my office for color. That came around quick. It feels like yesterday I was looking forward to starting the class...Time Flies!

I did get my grubby paws on some Indonesian silk worm coccoons. They are a lovely golden shade. I matched up some real fine silk yarn for the weft, and a cotton gima for the warp to coordinate with the cocoons. I figure I'll incorporate the coccoons in the fabric as I weave. Yes, that I'll take pictures of when I start. Nice thing about the cocoons no worm mummies!! Apparently the Indonesians eat them as they are a delicacy!! YEA!

I've got the village set up and the tree. This weekend I'll see my nephews and nieces I'll have lots of pictures then. they are so adorable! Just like their auntie!

The wind is whipping around

Hi all!

This is just a quick post about a funny NY moment...

I work on Water Street, two blocks north of the S.I. Ferry, and it is one of the windiest streets in NY. So picture this, I am waiting at the light leaning back against the wind, which is pushing so hard if it were to suddenly stop blowing I would be laying down on my back in the street. I see out of the corner of my a figure rush forward and hear an apologetic "oh excuse me..the wind!!!" This little lady was losing the battle with the Wind! I hold out my arm and yell over the wind...hurry catch on, catch on! She hooks into my left arm and this tall young guy hooks into my right arm...we run across the street into the shelter of the buildings, unhook arms and call good night to each other. All I can say is only in NY!

Nah!!! Off the loom Babeeeee!

Here is my first piece! yippeee! It is way too long to use as a scarf so it will be used as a table runner. We have to name our piece for the class show at Habu. I am naming mine Teacher's Pet...cause I am such a brown-noser!

Speaking of brown-nosing..here is my special little helper...

Yep...Lola is great with fringes! She is totally fascinated. I am looking forward to starting my next piece. I love the way the colors mix with each other. A simple twist changes the look of the yarn...Love it! I can not wait to see what my classmates have made...The show isn't until Dec. I have time to finish the fringe. I am braiding and knotting it at different lengths. That should look pretty funky.
